Alison Gilkes
Alison GilkesRemedial & Sports Massage TherapyAbout
Remedial & Sports Massage Therapy is just that. Therapy.
Massage is a versatile tool and can be invaluable in the treatment of a diverse range of problems. Clients come to the clinic for many reasons:
Frustrated clients unable to return to exercise due to old injuries and scars causing pain.
Clients with busy lifestyles that are stressed, tense, and need to unwind.
Clients who spend a long time in one position and experience tightness & stiffness when they move around.
Muscular aches, pains & stiffness?
Sports related injuries and niggles that impact your enjoyment or performance?
Stress, tension and generally feeling uptight?
Pain when moving a certain way, or when bending or lifting?
Old injuries that cause pain, or hinder peformance?
Stiffness from sitting at a desk all day?
Sports Specific
Runners, cyclists, triathletes and many others are prone to muscular injuries. Injuries may be mechanical, but can often be due to an individual’s particular biodynamics (way of moving), inherent muscular imbalances and non-activation of important muscle groups that are needed to support the movement.
Sports massage and remedial therapy can work to pinpoint the problem areas and work on releasing the tight musculature and fascia that is impeding movement, or causing pain. It comprises of remedial, deep tissue and holistic massage techniques and is completely bespoke to you and your needs.
Releasing tight and overused muscles can result in a greater range of movement and improved performance, as well as helping you to enjoy your chosen sport, pain free.
Amateur athletes who clock up a lot of mileage should consider sports massage as an integral part of their training regimen in order to keep the body pain and injury free, and to hit those PB’s. Regular sessions will keep you in peak fitness.
Wellbeing Massage
As the name implies, this massage will deal with the aches and pains you are experiencing that need not have any sporting connection. Once assessed, the massage will target the required areas and employ a number of techniques dependent on the client’s needs. This could involve deep tissue massage, or a gentle holistic massage that simply reduces tension, and leaves the client with a heightened sense of wellbeing.
Everyone will benefit from a wellbeing massage, as it can reduce muscle tension and pain
– improve the mobility of joints and range of movement
– improve rehabilitation after injury
– improve circulation

Beech Tree Inn (& craft shop)
Beech Tree Inn (& craft shop)Family Friendly Dining, Beer Garden & Animals GaloreAbout
The Beech Tree is a fantastic, family-friendly restaurant and bar, that sits just next to Dumgoyne distillery (a short drive north of Glasgow). Within an enviable rural setting, alongside the West Highland Way path and within a short walk from Dumgoyne hill, there is ample car parking and an extensive beer garden for warmer days.
The Beech Tree is a very popular venue for families, and it’s not difficult to see why. They are tolerant of children, offer an extensive child-friendly menu and have a menagerie of animals that will have the kids completely absorbed. Cute ducks, anyone? Miniature Shetland ponies? Wildlife walk? However, it’s not just children that enjoy The Beech Tree hospitality, and it’s a popular choice for walkers, cyclists, couples and those having a drive out from the city and want value for money dining.
To have a look at examples of the menu, click below (they also do takeaway):
Beech-Tree-Main-Menu-April-2017
Beech-Tree-Kids-Menu-2-March-2014
There is the bar area, snug, conservatory and extensive gardens that are all utilised for dining, so it’s easy to find a quiet space if you don’t appreciate the lively chatter of children.
What is quite endearing about The Beech Tree Inn, is that they do not set themselves up as a ‘fine dining experience’, but rather as an inn serving good old fashioned pub fayre. Locally sourced ingredients (where possible) are used to make a variety of homemade world dishes, but the focus is on good quality pub grub that offers great value for money.
There is also The Beech Tree Craft Shop to enjoy. This offers quite a broad selection of products from wooden sculptures, handmade jams & chutneys, funny printed baby bibs to printed (on site) t-shirts to commemorate your walking and climbing endeavours.
The Beech Tree Inn is certainly worth a visit. It’s popular with locals and visitors alike, and sometimes words don’t quite encapsulate what is on offer! A quick video play is recommended!
Useful Information
The Beech Tree Inn is located off the A81 Glasgow-Aberfoyle road in Dumgoyne, near Killearn, about 13 miles north of Glasgow City Centre.

Iona Buchanan
Iona Buchanan Gifts & HomewareAbout
Iona Buchanan is an artist and illustrator whose original works have been in constant demand since she gave up work in a commercial art gallery 20 years ago to create paintings rather than to sell them.
A botanical illustrator by training and inclination, her first passion was carefully observed and beautifully detailed watercolours of flowers, fruit and vegetables, (expect to see more of this in the months ahead). But a series of commissions from private collectors and some very bad puns by family members broadened her range of subjects to include birds, sea life and cartoons.
Frustrated by the inability to keep up with demand for originals and encouraged by clients, friends and relatives, she looked for opportunities to make her illustrations and images more widely available. It soon became evident that many of her images added charm, beauty and, sometimes, humor to numerous everyday household items.
Iona Buchanan’s design feature on cards, wrapping paper, prints, cushions, aprons, teatowels and a multitude of potential gift options.
All the items are avialable to buy online from the website.

We keep our lunch menu simple and fresh, with a few perenial favourites.
Coffee & Cakes
Did we mention cake? We do cake. All of it freshly made (nothing ‘bought in’ here). We have the usual favourites, plus some more unusual (and popular ones) such as Caramac Fancies.
Bistro Nights
Bistro nights are our ‘gourmet’ experience at Macmillans, and usually occur on a Thursday evening. BYOB, and enjoy a fantastic culinary experience as David gets to really show off his skills in the kitchen. The two or three course set menu has great choices, and is a perfect excuse to book a table with friends and have a lovely night away from the kids.
There is a small corkage charge, and a great atmosphere in the bistro. The conservatory is festooned with fairy lights, and with a relaxed vibe, it’s well suited to a romantic night for two, or to cater to a more buzzy table of old friends.
Booking is essential, and tables go very quickly. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for the next Bistro Night.
Dave’s Diner
Useful Information
The view of the mountains is amazing. Lovely friendly staff and the food. I have had the breakfast (only just managed to eat it all, but I had to it was so nice.) The burgers on Dave’s Diner are filling and are not fast food, a proper butcher style burger, plenty of meat. Bistro night was special and the food absolutely stunning. If you are in the area you have to visit. I would strongly recommend Dave’s diner and the bistro nights for that something a little more special.
P Smith
Well what can I say? A diamond find. My kids, hubby and I had lunch here yesterday and back for breakfast today, faultless. Totally recommend the Goats cheese, beetroot, rocket and onion toastie A great selection of delicious homemade cakes also, I even spied Gluten free too! Fresh coffee and a stunning view, what else can you ask for. Next time we will definitely be booking into one of the special Bistro nights. Nicola at front of house was so welcoming, friendly and professional, what a wee star . Cannot wait to return.
L Sykes
Just had brunch and it just hit the spot. Always well worth the journey from Alloa. Staff friendly and great food with a view as well as a well stocked Garden Centre next door.
Richard Cameron
This is an undiscovered gem. A relaxed bistro feel, with locally sourced ingredients and all dishes made from scratch. Very reasonably priced too. Smoked salmon was the best. Great venue for a day out from the city, to meet friends for coffee or lunch. It’s my favourite meeting place, and the views from the conservatory restaurant are fantastic. Yet to try Dave’s Diner on a Friday night, but hear great things.
E McQ
We’ve eaten here many time since the Macmillan take over and the food and service is consistently excellent. Can’t wait for the next Gourmet/Bistro Night!

Within the pretty rural Stirlingshire village of Killearn, this gastropub is within view of the stunning Loch Lomond and close to Glengoyne Distillery.
